Bio-identical Hormones and Compounding Myths

I thought this may be a good time to talk about bio-identical hormones and some of the myths associated with compounding.

Bio-identical hormones, like all compounded medications, are made from FDA and USP registered materials used by pharmaceutical manufactures. Their preparation is well regulated by state boards of pharmacy and also must meet national standards and guidelines for compounded medications.  The ingredients and their suppliers are regulated at the federal level by the FDA with additional oversight provided by the U.S. Pharmacopeia. In addition, there are also national standards and guidelines for compounded medications.

Unfortunately, there are no studies comparing products like Premarin and Prempro to bio-identical hormones. The Women’s Health Initiative study examined only Premarin and Prempro which are not the same ingredients used to compound bio-identical hormones. Many practitioners believe that the plant-based chemical structures of bio-identical hormones are more similar to the human body.

As we approach the holiday season I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge all the wonderful women I have had the privilege of working with during the past year. You have all come in with various concerns and trusted me to help you resolve some of them.  You have all brought insight and enrichment into my life and helped me learn and grow by listening to your stories and experiences.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy new year.
