I thought we could review some basics this month about understanding the types of hormones in our body that are compounded and their functions. To ensure the best results, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy prescriptions are customized to meet the needs of each individual with the goal of replacing hormones safely, at low levels and optimal relief of bothersome symptoms experienced by post-menopausal women.
Estrogen is the main sex hormone in women and is not only essential to the menstrual cycle but also important to bone health, vessels, the cardiovascular system, joints, mood, skin tone, and memory. Progesterone is necessary for fertility and pregnancy as well as protecting the uterine lining against endometrial cancer. Other functions include bone building, stabilizing blood sugar, increased energy, and enhanced mood. A progesterone deficiency often causes symptoms of premenstrual symptoms during the second half of the cycle. Testosterone activates the sexual circuits in the brain and plays a dramatic role in libido, sexual satisfaction, well-being, bone strength, and body composition. Testosterone declines in both men and women as they age which often leads to problems with fatigue as well as decreased sexual drive. DHEA is another important hormone in the body. It helps support immunity, memory, protects against stress, enhanced memory and brain function. DHEA is actually a precursor to other hormones which means the body converts it into other hormones the body may need.
Knowing the vast functions of hormones in the body is key to understanding the many imbalances and symptoms we experience as we age. The body truly is looking for these hormones to perform their functions. When they are not there, the adrenal glands are literally on “screech” trying to compensate . This can lead to increased stress, poor sleep and weight gain. We all want to look and feel our best as we age. Replacing some of these hormone deficiencies can help us with that.
Happy Spring!
